Collecting Cones

Collecting Cones

Try collecting different cones outside.  There are to fun activities to be done with cones.

As cones open and close their woody scales according to the dampness in the air. When the air is dry the scales move apart and when it is damp they close up tightly.  By simply hanging a large cone outside or in a porch you can use it as a simple barometer to forecast the weather.

A more creative alternative is covering them in PVA glue and sprinkling or rolling them in glitter. Then tie a piece of ribbon, wool or thread to the tip. To make a fantastic Christmas Tree decoration, or simply place along window ledges or mantelpieces.
